For many, landing a job that you can work at home is often a rewarding experience and one that often offers a number of appealing benefits that your everyday brick-and-mortar job might not. It’s important to remember, however, that there are always ups and downs to doing so, just as you’d likely find with any other job that’s out there.
Most at-home workers, for instance, tend to appreciate the fact that they don’t necessarily even have to get out of their favorite pajamas when it comes time to punching in and getting to work. Unless a person has to travel now and then for their type of work, many also tend to enjoy being able to save on things such as gas, work attire, drive time, or even with having to find a babysitter. While many may feel that working from home would be the ultimate luxury and a walk in the park, the truth is that it requires a significant amount of discipline, dedication, organization, being a self-starter and having the ability to see things through without constant supervision, if any. Aside from the rare occasion, most who work from home are often self-employed as an independent contractor or freelance worker. Not only does this mean that you are responsible for your own taxes and overall accounting, but it also means that there generally aren’t any company benefits such as what you might find offered with outside employment jobs–that is, aside from a few exceptions to the rule.
Whether you want to work part-time or full-time, earn a little cash or work independently as your main source of income, you have to be able to keep on top of the game in order to make a decent living. While setting your own hours may seem novel, many would be surprised at just how hard it can be to get yourself working if you’re really not feeling the motivation to do so, and is often something that even the most disciplined professionals can suffer from upon occasion.
Maintaining a proper sense of professionalism is also the key to success–no matter the type of work that you do. It’s important to remember that there are many potential workers looking to fill the spot of anyone who isn’t showing quality work and professionalism to their clients or the people that they work for, and it can often be a case slim pickings when it comes to actual at-home work that’s available out there; therefore, putting in your full effort is crucial in order to keep work coming in or even to keep a job.
The often higher-paying jobs generally go to those who are the more skilled professionals in a specific type of field such as writers, web designers, transcriptionists, virtual administrative assistants, consultants, programmers, graphic designers, billing and coding workers, and so forth. Generally, companies or clients prefer a decent amount of experience in said field and/or a certain amount of schooling or training for it. While some companies may hirer workers as employees and offer benefits, others may obtain work as an independent contractor or freelance worker, whether working for a specific company or on their own. Some skilled professionals might also telecommute from a brick-and-mortar establishment within their local area, occasionally make trips to the work place, but doing the bulk of their work from home.
The slightly lower-paying and sometimes hard-to-find jobs are often ones such as data entry, sales, telemarketing, phone or chat customer service, SEO writers, bloggers, or entertainment-based workers. While most at-home jobs can be highly-competitive, often times entry-level jobs such as these can be few and far between, as there are many people who are out there and are looking for extra money, but may lack the skills for other types of work that they can do from home. These jobs, while not always, are often set to where a person works as self-employed.
Whether you are a skilled professional or one looking to work at home as entry-level, no matter what job you choose, always make sure to do your research and know what you’re getting into. Also, keep an eye out for jobs that require you to pay to work there. While there may be some legitimate businesses that require money for fees on background checks, you should never have to pay to work a job, just as you normally wouldn’t have to do so in order to work outside of the home. Check with forums or work-at-home websites that have worker reviews to see how about a particular company fairs, or search for reviews through Yahoo or Google. Learn to network with other at-home workers through forums and websites, as you never know what luck or good opportunities that you could possibly run into.
