Google Adwords is a great tool to use from driving traffic to your profitable home business website, and it works very well. Adwords succeeds whether you use it to obtain leads, generate sales, or just to try new offers. With Adwords one can market a product throughout the world, or geographically target specific locations such as countries, states or even specific cities. But, If you get started without becoming prepared for your campaign or doing some research on the subject, you will end up making some big mistakes that will hinder rather than help you. 1) Failing to Split Test

The easiest way I can say this is: Broad keywords will not help you make any money, but instead will keep you from making money and won’t give you the results you want. Bidding on keywords that are too broad will not help you. Let’s say you wanted to use the keyword ‘home business‘. Generally, people using broad terms like ‘business’ or ‘home business’ during a web search are looking for information or fishing for ideas, and aren’t really all that interested in buying. Only people who are unsure of their goal will search using those keywords, and they’re on their way to some other site. If you want to get good results you have to focus your keyword down to one that goes right along with your offer. With common, broad keywords, most of the people who visit your site will not really be interested in whatever it is that you are offering. If we use the keyword from before we will find that on Google you get 78,400,000 results using ‘hospital’, but if you broaden the term and use ‘find a hospital’ you only get 249,000 results. This simply means that the narrower term not only has less competition but also a purpose. Individuals using this term have a good idea what their goal is in their search. Place yourself in their shoes so that you can figure out what they are wanting.

2) Negative Keywords should Not be Neglected

In addition to Adwords, there is an option to display your ads on the Google Content Network, a group of websites displaying ads. It is important to understand that there is no way to know if these sites will be targeted towards your topic. Plus, they could be Adsense based, meaning the information on them is either not relevant or can be strong competition for your products. How does this affect your web marketing campaign? You’re paying big bucks for sub-prime ad placement and there’s a good chance you won’t make any return on your money. Ad’s like these are even more difficult to track. In other words, when you are starting your Adwords campaign, be sure to turn off the ‘content network’ and focus your efforts with Google and its partners. The Content Network does have it’s benefits, but it is a whole other universe with different rules.

3. You didn’t continue your focus on your landing page.

Unrealistic expectations are almost always the cause of the number one mistake made by people new to Adwords. They get excited about their potential earnings and start counting money they’ve not yet made. They simply look at the numbers in their market, realize it has a lot of potential, and believe they will be able to have 10,000 visitors in the first month, resulting in tons of profits. It is better to select a lower, less expensive traffic generating option as you get the hang of Adwords and tweak your campaign, and then grow into the traffic generating mode that best compliments your conversions.
