Tips On Protecting Electrical Cords From Pets

The inquisitive nature of your pets can put them in spot of bother. Often, the pets try to be playful with the suspended electrical cords and wires. The electrical cords lying on the floor or traveling along the walls offer an easy access to the pets. Such a scenario may prove hazardous for your pets and can even lead to a loss of life.

To prevent such an accident, take certain preventive measures in advance. You may need to alter the setting of the internal wiring as well to achieve the desired results. However, there are certain techniques that may serve the required purpose without getting into the technical aspect of the electrical setup.

The simplest method of preventing your pets from chewing on electrical cords is to take away the cords from their access range. With the help of electric tape or insulation tape, attach the length of wire to the top of the walls or ceilings. Such setting would not allow the pets to distort the wiring finish. Alternatively, you can conceal the suspended cords behind furniture or any other object. Make sure that the object is large enough to cover the entire length of the cord lying on the floor. When the cord goes out of their sight, the pets don’t show any curiosity in locating the hidden cord.

Safety cables available in the market can also serve the required purpose. Wrap the safety cables around the concerned length of the electrical cord. The rigid cover doesn’t allow the pets to penetrate the cord.

Some homeowners use tricky methods to keep the pets away from the cords. Interestingly, most of them work quite efficiently. For instance, the use of standard contact paper can do the job for you. Unroll the contact paper around the electrical cord such that the sticky face of the paper is exposed to the pets. On contacting the cord, the pets find themselves caught in the sticky side of the paper.

Besides these, certain kitchen products can also serve the required purpose. The bitter or unpleasant taste of such items forces the pets to maintain a distance from them. When such items are applied on the cords then the pets fear to take the wire in their mouths.

For example, the edible items such as pepper sauce, menthol, toothpaste, lemon juice etc. can be used to do the intended job.

You can experiment between such edible items and thereafter, select the one that serves the required purpose as intended.

Buy Electrical Wires The Correct Way

It is always a wise option to make the electrical purchases yourself. Such an effort would help you to save on the overall cost of the electrical project. The different electrical fixtures and wires must be purchased by the homeowners. The guidance of an expert may assist you with the selection of right kind of electrical fixtures.

There are a number of factors that play a part in the decision making process. You need to understand the requirements of your electrical setup before making the actual purchases. Also, the size of the electrical wires should be apprehended in advance. The size of the wire takes into account the thickness and the load measure of the electrical wire. Furthermore, the length of the wire required must be measured from the starting point to the end point.

The preliminary step of purchasing the electrical wires requires collection of necessary information. However, the step that follows after the preliminary step actually tests your patience. You have to deal with the salespersons and the dealers to find the best deal. Also, locate the electrical stores that offer such variety of electrical wires. Do not mistake the power cables or the speaker cables as the regular electrical wires.

To avoid the disloyal deals of the salespersons or the dealers, you would need the experience of an expert electrician. He would help you in differentiating between the honest and dishonest deals. Stick to the type of electrical wires that you want to buy and do not compromise on the quality front.

Furthermore, enquire about the mode of their business. For example, if the wires are purchased from the manufacturers directly on a wholesale then it would be priced on a low scale. On the other hand, the involvement of distributors would increase the price of the finally available product.

The electrician who helps you with the purchases should be honest and reliable. Choose the one who possesses some pleasant experience of working on your electrical segments in the past. Dishonest electrician may demand a commission from the concerned salesperson by cheating on you.

Use a measuring tape to note down the length of the wiring required. Use the values as a standard for buying the accurate length of electrical wires.

Make sure that the purchased supplies contain the receipt of the bill, warranty card and the user manual along with the rest of the package.

Tips On Hiding The Electrical Cords Lying On The Floor

Whenever you intend to run a length of electrical cord from an associated apparatus to an electrical outlet, you must conceal the cord in a single line. In actual practice, the homeowners choose to lay the electrical cords in an unordered manner. They avoid getting into the thick of the things and leave the cords suspended. They pay minimum attention to the state of the electrical cords. Even the floor area that is prone to water accumulation faces such an unordered arrangement of electrical cords and wires.

Water may come in contact with the cord easily and lead to an electrical accident. Besides that, the pets find an easy access to the electrical cords and they may end up chewing the cord. Moreover, the children may touch the plug of the electric cord at anytime.

The one time job of concealing the electrical cords lying on the floor can save you from the possible electrical accidents. The good thing about the task is that it doesn’t require you to be an expert of the trade. Some logic coupled with right tools can save the day for you.

Check the nearby wall area for any baseboard or large-sized covering. Most homeowners hide the electrical cords in a diagonal way. Such a scheme should be prevented and instead, collect the length of the wire along the nearby wall area only. Use an extension cord that would cover the length of cord from the concerned electrical outlet to the wall. Make sure that the cord doesn’t fall short in length while reaching out to the electrical equipment or outlet.

Pull up the baseboard from its edges with the help of a screwdriver or a pry bar tool. Collect the required length at the onset of the baseboard and put the length into the back of the baseboard. Restore the position of the baseboard by nailing down the setup.

Alternatively, you can attach the concerned length of wire along the edge of the baseboard. Such a temporary setting saves you from the task of prying up the board.

Make sure that the length of wire outside the baseboard is properly attached to the foot of the wall. Staple the cord to the foot of the wire.

Place an attractive carpet on the baseboard area to enhance the appeal of the room.

Safety Precautions To Be Followed While Cutting A Live Electrical Wire

The thought of working with the live electrical wiring sends shivers down the body of the novices. Even the homeowners who possess some expertise of the trade avoid such tasks. The experts always advise you to stay away form the live electrical wiring. As far as the electrical repair works are concerned, one must cut off electricity before doing anything else.

In the rarest cases, you may have to work on an active electrical wire. The gravity of the situation doesn’t permit you enough time to locate the electrical breaker box or the electric fuse. The loss of time could prove decisive in an electrical emergency. Some homeowners even fail to locate the breaker box or electric fuse. Such an ignorant attitude leads to heavy loss during an electrical emergency.

For instance, a member of your home may find himself caught in an unfortunate shock. In case of AC supply, the shock may send shivers down the body of the person and may release him or her immediately. The things reverse when the supply is of direct current (DC). Loss of time could lead to an unfortunate loss of life. In such a situation, you can adopt two possible paths. You can either run down to the breaker box of your home or cut the live electrical wire instantly.

The instant action saves some precious time in the project. Also, a wise head on your shoulders can save the invaluable life of your dear one.

There are certain tips that need to be followed in order to accomplish the task with safety.

The common mistake made by a majority of the homeowners is that they try to pull the victim out forcefully. Such an action brings you into the faulty electric circuit. Furthermore, do not throw water or any other liquid on the person.

Make sure that you are wearing rubber slippers or shoes. If you are not wearing shoes or slipper then don’t waste time looking for one. Locate a wooden block or stick and try to dissociate the wire from the victim’s body. Focus the strike on the wire rather than the body of the person.

Carefully take away the person from the site and cut the faulty wire with wiring cutters. Render required medical aid to the victim.

How To React To Electrical Burns ?

The electrical hazards often leave you clueless. The uninformed homeowners fail to react wisely to the situation and hence, such a scenario leads to a possible loss of life and property. Therefore, proper preventive measures must be taken in advance to fight against an electrical emergency. Moreover, you should be prepared to medically escort a victim of an electric shock.

The fatal electric shocks can often produce a threat to a person caught in an electric shock. The heart patients may suffer a deadly heart attack due to the impact of the electric shock. Also, the brain may suffer a blow due to the effects of electric shocks. Moreover, the burns of the electric shock may sustain on the skin if not treated in a right manner.

The primary objective is to release the victim from the faulty electrical circuit. Switch off or unplug the electrical device that is involved in the hazard. Alternatively, you can switch off the main power supply if the electrical breaker box or electric fuse is located at a close distance from the accident site. Try to save as much time as possible during the course of action. Use a wooden block or stick to release the victim from the faulty circuit.

Avoid touching the victim and try to dissociate the electrical wire from the person’s body with the help of the object. Physical contact with the person would make you another casualty of the accident.

Lay the victim on a properly covered floor area. Hold the hand of the victim to check the pulse. Try to restore the normal breathing of the victim by rubbing his or her palm and feet. Apply the cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques to re-establish the normal circulation of blood in the body of the victim. Meanwhile, call an ambulance by dialing the notified phone number.

Position the body of the victim in such a way that the effects of the shocks get nullified. Do not let the temperature of the body drop down.

Take out regular sterile bandage roll from the first aid box and apply it properly on the electrical burns. The dusty and dirty pieces of cloth must not be used to cover the electrical burns.

Proactive attitude would definitely save you from loss of property and lives.

Installing A New Electrical Wall Switch

Often, the electricians charge more than the actual cost of a particular electrical repair work. The uninformed homeowners fail to save on such unwanted electrical expenses. On the other hand, the wise homeowners take up the challenge of handling the minor electrical jobs on their own. Similarly, the job of replacing an electrical wall switch is considered easy enough to be handled by a novice.

Determine the reason for your replacement of the concerned switch and henceforth, select a switch type that is more efficient than the old switch. Furthermore, the working of the new switch must complement the architecture of your electrical setup. Decide whether you want a standard flip switch or a fancy switch. The fancy wall switches are cheaper than the regular ones. Visit a local electrical store and check the available variety of the switch type you want to purchase.

Furthermore, decide the tools that would be required during the electrical task on hand. Examine the electrical tool box to find all the necessary tools. In case of a shortage, purchase the concerned tool from the same electrical store.

Most experts advise the beginners to cut off the electricity supply when handling an electrical project. The possibility of electric hazards or accidents drops down dramatically owing to such preventive measures. In order to shut down the power supply of the home, locate the breaker box or the electric fuse. Turn off all the breaker switches one by one.

Take a look at the finish of the screws on the wall plate. Take out a screwdriver which has a tip similar to that of the screwdriver’s finish. Generally, the wall plates use either flat tip screws or Philips head screws.

Before undoing the different wires from the terminals of the switches, note down the configuration on a rough piece of paper. Do not move ahead until you possess a clear idea of the wiring schema. You can use the switch board to write down the wiring connections.

Observe the way by which the wires are connected to the terminals of the switch. Generally, the lugs hold the wires in place and the screws bind the setting together. Unscrew the lugs of the switch and take out the connecting wires carefully. Pull out the old switch and replace it with the newly purchased one. Connect the wires as per the specifications and finish off the task.

Make sure that the wiring schema is followed while making the connections. Replace the wall plate on the socket and check the normal operation of the new switch by switching on the power supply.

Testing An Electric Capacitor

The remaining capacity of the capacitor can be concluded with the use of an ohm meter. Normally, ohm meter tells you about the power and the remaining charging capacity of the capacitor. As capacitor can accumulate charge even when it is not attached to an electrical source, be sure to discharge it before testing.

First of all, you have to discharge the capacitor. In order to discharge it completely, you would need a screw driver with an insulated handle. Grip the screw driver from the insulated end and touch the metal end of the screwdriver to the capacitor. The screwdriver would discharge the capacitor with an electric spark.

Now, bring in the required instrument, an ohm meter and make that sure it is powered on. Place the red lead into the connector showing ohm and the other black one in the connecter marked com.

Touch both the probes to each other and zero the meter by adjusting the knobs placed on the meter. Zero value is located on the extreme right of the meter and the extreme left is known as infinity.

Now, make contact between the terminals of capacitor and the ohm meter leads. If the needle moves towards the zero ohms and then back to the infinite position, then it indicates that the capacitor is in good condition. The uniform movement of needle indicates that capacitor is correctly charging and discharging.

Next, reverse the combination of the connection between the capacitor leads and ohm meter leads. The behavior of needle on the face of meter remains same as in the previous case. If the meter suddenly drops to zero and never comes back to infinite position then the capacitor is shorted one.

In case the needle of the meter never deflects then a wide open circuit or an internal break is detected in the capacitor. In both the cases, the capacitor needs to be replaced.

Take proper precautions while testing the capacitor. Improper testing could lead to a possible accident.

Splice The Electrical Wires In A Right Way

The task of splicing electrical wires is almost regular in a majority of electrical jobs. It is very important to splice the wires properly as an improper juncture could lead to shorts or irregularities. The splicing of electrical wires is one task that is quite regular in most electrical repair works.

Proper twists and twirls are important while splicing the electrical wires together. Efficient splicing would lead to a strong binding between the participating electrical wires. Hence, they would not fall apart with due course of time. Often, the homeowners focus on the connection of the two wires rather than the strength of the connection. Such a scenario leads to electrical shorts and irregularities.

There are few tips that one needs to follow in order to carry out a wire splicing job in a right manner. Furthermore, follow the required safety precautions to ensure the safety of your home.

Locate the two wires that need to be merged. Take them out carefully from the panel or the socket. It is always advisable to switch off the main breaker box before you move ahead with the proceedings. You can confirm the same by testing the concerned circuit or socket with the help of a voltage tester. Make sure that the length of wires fetched from the panel is straight and kink free.

Straighten the length of both the wires and make sure that the wires are not entangled. Strip off some insulation from the connecting ends of both the wires. Handle the stripping job carefully with the help of cutters and strippers. The cut should be gentle and should not damage the internal composition of the wires.

Hold the ends of the wires together and twist them with the help of a pair of pliers. Render 2-3 turns to the binding with the help of pliers. Do not overdo the twisting operation.

Place the wire connectors on the spliced juncture of the electrical circuit. If the connectors fail to provide any resistance to the turning operation then use the smaller connectors. On the other end, go ahead with the resistive wire connectors. Continue until the connector slides over the wires completely.

Call an electrician if things start to slip out of your hand at any instance of the project.

Outdoor Lighting Features To Consider

Outdoor lighting is installed for purposes such as for safety and beautifying the outdoor area. But while deciding the type of outdoor lighting to be purchased, you need to keep in mind certain factors and here we will brief about all such factors.

First of all, you need to check if the lights you are considering to purchase are waterproof or not. This could be determined by IP rating of a particular light. A waterproof light could have any rating from IPx3 to IPx5. IPx3 means the light can withstand all kind of outdoor conditions but IPx4 and IPx5 are much better.

Direction in which the light is required is an important factor to consider while purchasing an outdoor light. Uplights or backlights could be fixed on ground or out of view as the main purpose of these lights is to shine out some attractive objects that you want to highlight. In downlights, the lights are set above an object and cast its shadow in downward direction.

For lighting up a particular path, sideways, driveway or a walkway, path lights are considered to be very efficient. As these lights are good in lighting up a particular pathway, a person can easily reach his destination by walking along the path. Select those lights that are covered and could provide good and bright light.

Floodlights provide a bright light for a broad range of ground in your outdoor areas. These lights are meant to brighten up a large portion of ground and are excellent for areas where security is a concern at night. Lights installed to increase night time security are often accompanied by a timer or a passive infrared sensor.

Lighting kits are also good for outdoor lighting and have low voltage. Due to low voltage, they do not consume much electricity and are cheap. Low voltage lights are also safe to use as the extent and affect of shock reduces in a low voltage light.

Underwater lighting is popular for areas that have a fountain, a fish pond, a spa or swimming area. These areas need special underwater lights, with the highest IP Ranking. There are many temporary lighting styles available for outdoor areas. These include party lights, string lights and patio torches. All can be set up and taken down when they are needed and can be used to create a specific mood for a specific occasion in your outdoor areas.

Solar powered light is also a good option for outdoor lighting. These lights are energy efficient as they saves solar energy during the day time and utilize this during night hours to bright up your house.
